Monferrato between wine, brandy and chocolate: day trip

img

- Taste the great wines of Monferrato, such as Cortese, Albarossa and Dolcetto
- Discover the flavours and traditions of Piedmont
- Learn how grappa is produced
- Grappa tasting paired with chocolate

Begin your adventure from Turin and across the Piedmont countryside to reach a small village near Gavi, Monterotondo, where you will arrive around 10.30. Here you will visit the winery The Mesma, a property of 25 hectares planted with Cortese. At the head of the property are three sisters whose family name is Rosina: Paola, Francesca and Anna, who despite their own single studies and experiences, decided to carry on the family business. The reason for such a decision is love for their land, and more particularly for Gavi. Besides La Mesma, they also own another property of 10 hectares in Tassarolo. The basis of their work is the belief that to get healthy vines and vineyards is necessary to cultivate a healthy soils. To observe the great biodiversity of the area, they decided to implement farming practices like green manure and pruning method with Simonit and Sirch techniques, as well as a constant presence in the vineyard and procedures that do not include the use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers. The vinification process is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Wines therefore maintain a balanced taste and have an elegant and fruity bouquet. The second stop will be in the hills of Monferrato, in company-run organic winery called Rocco Carpeneto. Lydia and Paul will be there to welcome you and show you the vineyards. After two decades spent in the traffic of Milan, Lydia and Paul left the city life and moved to the countryside, where they now produce organic wine, unfiltered and with a minimal addition of sulfites. The vineyards cover five hectares are planted with native grapes of Piedmont (Dolcetto, Barbera, Cortese, Nebbiolo, Albarossa). You will visit the small, modern cellar and you will be taken to a guided tasting of three wines paired with cheese, meat and other local products. The third step of the tour will be the Distillery Silvano d'Orba, founded in 1870 by Bartolomeo Gualco and carried out by his granddaughter Susanna Gualco. Find out more of the ancient craft of distillation, visit the original distillation plant in a water bath, the aging cellar of the late 1700s, listen to the description of the production methods for infusing the flavor to grappa and experience a guided tasting of 4 types of grappa. The tasting will be paired with different types of chocolate Bodrato. Bodrato is a craft company founded in Liguria in the '40s and later moved to Monferrato in the early '70s. These characteristics make the wines of Franciacorta appreciated all over the world. The first stop will be at the winery Mosnel around at 10.15. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, the Mosnel is one of the most beautiful and best preserved names. Mosnel is a family run business: to carry on with the production of wine is now the fifth generation of the family, especially Lucia, who is in charge of marketing, and Giulio Barzanò, who manages the production of wines and vineyards. The Mosnel was among the first producers in the area, kicking off the production since 1968. The winery is located in an ancient furnace restored, which, thanks to those who were once the tunnels baking bricks, proved perfect for honing the Franciacorta, as well as to accommodate wine enthusiasts. Contadi Castaldi now manages over 100 hectares of land located in different parts of the region, so that the wine expresses all the nuances of the territory. Agnolotti, bagna cauda, cooked salami and cheese as Montebore and Robiola are all typical of the region. At 10:30 you will stop for the first step, the winery Marenco. Ownership of Marenco is located in the village of Strevi. Michele was the grandfather to establish and subsequently expand the company, together with his son Joseph. Over the years, the family bought the best land in the area and chose to cultivate more typical varieties. At the head of all there are now three sisters Michela, (with her husband, Dr. John Costa), Patrizia and Goldie, whose father Joseph has a love for the land and that deal with the whole chain, from vine to glass. To discover the beauty of the vineyards, there's nothing better than a wonderful walk. Surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, you will learn all about the history of this family business and production of Monferrato wine. You will then be accompanied by a tasting of 5 different wines, including Cariasolo, product Caricalasino, also called white Barbera, a variety of Piedmont, which threatened to be lost. Other wines of the tasting include Moscato Passito di Strevi DOC, the Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG and Albarossa, a variety of Piedmontese grape obtained by a cross between Chatus (Nebbiolo Dronfield) and Barbera, discovered in 1938 by Professor Dalmasso of Turin during his research of new varieties that unite the color and the elegance of the Nebbiolo with the freshness and drinkability of Barbera. The tour will continue until you reach Ovada. Lunch will be served at 12:45 in a restaurant reminiscent of the typical country inns. It welcomes guests with checkered tablecloths, genuine food and quality ingredients. The menu includes traditional Piedmontese dishes with influences from Liguria, this being a frontier land. Do not miss the agnolotti in wine! The hospitality and friendliness of this place will amaze and seduce you. Then you will reach the Casa Vinicola Rocco Carpeneto. Here you will be greeted by Lydia who, after producing wine for twenty years in the frenzy of the city of Milan has decided to move to the country with her husband Paul. Today they manage 5 hectares of organic vineyards. Production is concentrated on grapes typical of the area, such as Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Albarossa and courteous. Here the wines are treated exclusively with copper, sulfur and pyrethrum. In the cellar exclusively indigenous yeasts are used and the wines do not undergo filtration. Lidia will tell you all about viticulture and the production of organic wine and will accompany you on a tasting of three different wines. After the visit the tour will start again to return to Milan, where you will arrive later than 18:45.

- Michelin starred lunch, with amazing views
- Private and exclusive tour, just for yourself, you are not with anyone else
- Pick up and drop off at your own location with luxury vehicle

Meet your private driver at your hotel in Milan at 09.00 and transfer to Langhe countryside (2hr driving), part of UNESCO World Heritage list. The region offer panoramas of carefully cultivated hillsides, following ancient land divisions punctuated with buildings that give structure to the visual space: hilltop villages, castles, Romanesque churches, farms, ciabots, cellars and storehouses for cellaring and for the commercial distribution of the wine in the small towns and larger towns on the margins of the vineyards. The serial property is outstanding for its harmony, and the balance between the aesthetic qualities of its landscapes, the architectural and historical diversity of the built elements associated with the wine production activities and an authentic and ancient art of winemaking. Itineray
At 11.00: Arrive to Marchesi di Gresy and visit the winery with your private wine guide. After the tour, enjoy a vertical tasting of 4 old vintages of Barbaresco. This is a nifty way of experiencing Barbaresco wines, you will get a good knowledge of style of these wines. You will see how unique weather patterns may affect the grapes from one year to the next and how different every vintage can be. Tenute Cisa Asinari Dei Marchesi di Grésy is the full name of this vaunted family estate that possesses the only monopole cru vineyard in all of Piedmont: theMartinenga Vineyard. This stunning 29.5 acre holding has been known since the Romans. The southern exposure and blue marl allow an ideal ripening of the Nebbiolo grape. Like many Piedmont family-owned wineries, the di Grésy family’s constant presence on the land began centuries ago. In 1797, the noble di Grésy family purchased the Martinenga property located atop the area’s highest hill, Monte Aribaldo nearby Treiso. For nearly two centuries, the di Grésy family produced and sold their prized grapes in the Alba grape market each autumn. Alberto di Grésy assumed control of the estate in the 1960s. Not surprisingly given di Grésy’s passion and determination, he grew weary of seeing others reap the rewards of converting the fruits of their labors into wine. At 13.00: Lunch will be at the outstanding Michelin starred La Ciau del Tornavento, This restaurant has one of the most evocative views in the Langhe region and a menu featuring imaginative, contemporary-style cuisine, as well as an excellent wine list. It provides a delightful dining experience and is perfect in every way, including the service. Sample dishes could include charcoal grilled Veal filet, sweetbreads and Santena asparagus; Sanato veal breaded in breadsticks, Asiatic salad and hazelnut; roasted beef slices with tuna sauce; plin di Seirass: ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese surrounded by a nest of May hay; warm soup, veal, goat and sheep milk, asparagus tips, quail poched egg and black truffle; puff pastry, creamy hazelnut, salty peanuts, milk mint ice cream; ‘Gianduia’ tartlet with pipe tobacco ice-cream. Transfer to Barolo village and at 16.00 have a vertical tasting of 4 old vintages of Barolo at traditional style winery Borgogno, going back to 1982 vintage! The large Borgogno cellar dominates the center of the village and serves as a monument to traditional Barolo. Bartolomeo Borgogno founded this estate in 1761, but it is a historic document dated 1848 that attests to its first wine sales to the Royal Army of Racconigi. After the tour and tasting, you will have free time to visit the quaint hamlet. Located in an ornate hollow of hills covered by vineyards, the simple and cosy village is dominated by the austere image of Faletti castle, dating to the X century and site of the regional wine shop of Barolo. - Visit a winery in Canelli, one of the "underground cathedrals" in the list of UNESCO World Heritage
- Lunch in a renowned restaurant with traditional cuisine

Canelli is one of the inland towns of the province of Asti, famous for the best Italian sparkling wines. It has an architectural heritage which stretches for about 20 kilometers under the city: extraordinary wine cellars dug in the hills of tufa creating really impressive scenarios. Hand-hewn from the 16th century, these are completely filled with wine - thousands of barrels and millions of bottles, due to the perfect thermal natural, able to maintain a constant temperature of 12-14 degrees C (54 -57 degrees F), ideal for the aging of the best wines. The building was enlarged in the 19th century, when the high quality of the wines Canelli had established itself on a global scale after the barrels were shipped abroad, in Europe and overseas. Itinerary
09:00: Pick up in Milan and transfer to the Piedmont countryside 11:00: Arrival at the home of truffle and meeting with Natale. He will introduce you to the magical world of truffles: what they are, where they grow, what tools are used to find them. Then you will go hunting for truffles, aided by expert dogs. Once back at Natale's home, you can enjoy the precious tuber, paired with local wines. Before leaving, you will have a copy of the book Natale's truffles, with anecdotes, information and recipes. After this fine aperitif, you're moving in Canelli at 13:30 for lunch at the Michelin-starred restaurant "San Marco". This restaurant has a family atmosphere thanks to the fireplace and the warm family welcome Chef Mariuccia and her husband Piercarlo. You will enjoy the excellent cuisine of Piedmont, with the tasting of the "traditional menu":

- Homemade pasta called "tajarin" mountain butter flavored with herbs

- Taste the best wines from local vineyards, as the Ghemme and the Gattinara
- Shop at discounted prices from manufacturers of wool and cashmere.
- Admire the local church, the perfect setting for unforgettable weddings

Participate in this one-day tour from Milan and discover the beautiful Lake Orta, the pearl of the North Italy. Admire its breathtaking views and taste its delicious wines!

PROGRAM
10.00: Starting from the center of Milan, you will cross the Piedmont countryside between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. The area is known as the Novara hills and boasts exceptional wines. The red wines are dominated by Spanna (the local name for the Nebbiolo), supported by Barbera, Croatina and Vespolina (also known as Bonarda). The white wine is the leading Greco Novarese, also known as Erbaluce. All these wines are an authentic expression of the local wine-making traditions practiced for centuries.
11.00: Visit and tasting at a local winery, the Torraccia of Piantavigna.
The vineyards are located in the areas of DOCG Ghemme and Gattinara, are spread over 40 hectares, entirely dedicated to the production of Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Erbaluce, the three most common wines the North Piedmont. Wines DOCG Ghemme and Gattinara DOCG are the best selection of Torraccia. Both are, in fact, winners of national awards. The philosophy of this company is to produce wines of excellent quality at the right price and with maximum respect for the environment. After visiting the wineries and distilleries, have a light lunch with tasting of 4 wines: you can enjoy a rich selection of local cheeses, meats, food products, biscuits and two kinds of schnapps and liqueurs.
After the tour of the winery, you will have free time (about 1 hour) to visit the outlet Lanificio Colombo. The factory of wool and cashmere Luigi Colombo is the largest weaver of fine fibers and cashmere in the world.
Then you will reach the Lake Orta (40 minutes by car), where you will have free time to visit Orta San Giulio. Location cloaked in romance, Orta San Giulio is a maze of narrow cobbled and pictoresque streets and. Squares, reminiscent of the "squares" of Venice, are animated by the presence of craft boutiques, antique shops and lively cafes. To enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Orta, we recommend a visit to the church of the Assumption, dating from the fifteenth century, and very popular for weddings. From here, a staircase of granite leads to Piazza Motta, the town's main square. The district Moccarolo, in the southern part of the village, is characterized by an elegant series of villas and townhouses, all with small flower gardens overlooking the lake. The most beautiful view of the area is from the Sacred Mountain of Orta, a complex of chapels built between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth in a wooded area of the Special Nature Reserve of the Sacred Mountain.

The flavors of the Valtellina: tour with a visit to the winery and cheese factory

img

- Visit to a cheese factory and discover the local products
- Taste the great red wines of Valtellina, land of Nebbiolo
- 5-course dinner with local products, for an experience in "zero km"

Participate in the discovery of one of the most beautiful areas of northern Italy. Valtellina will surprise you with its flavors and traditions handed down from generation to generation, making it a unique and fascinating land. Come aboard the minibus and then the ferry at 09:55: from Bellagio you will arrive in Varenna, from where you will continue the journey by minibus up in Valtellina, picturesque region crossed by the river Adda. Destination sought after by lovers of mountain life, as well as skiers and good food eaters, the Valtellina is also the land of the "heroic viticulture". This definition comes from the fact that the terracing with dry stone walls built by our ancestors on the steep sides of the hills, do not allow the use of machinery for the grape harvest, which still is only performed manually, and requires enormous efforts. There are many traditions that have been handed down in the Valtellina valley, among them the culinary one. You will taste genuine products such as Bresaola DOP, the two cheeses from the region, Bitto and Casera DOP, and finally you can not miss the delicious Pizzoccheri of Valtellina. The arrival in La Fiorida is scheduled for 10:45. This farm boasts one of the most evocative landscapes of the region, in the beautiful surroundings of the valley: here the Bergamo Alps meet the Rhaetian Alps a few kilometers from Lake Como. With 200 cows, 300 pigs, 70 goats, vegetable gardens and orchards and a room for milking The Fiorida offers visitors a real experience of production and "zero km" consumption. The buildings made of wood and stone on the bank of the Adda blend perfectly with the surrounding landscape and large pastures ensure compliance with the agricultural traditions of the region. Your guide will explain all about dairy production, stables, milking and rooms of aging for cheese. The lunch menu will be in the name of tradition, with local dishes such as pizzoccheri, pork ribs with polenta, a plate of cheeses of the house and berries with frozen natural yogurt. After lunch, the journey continues to the second stop: the visit to one of the most beautiful vineyards of Valtellina. One of the most important is undoubtedly the Casa Vinicola Nino Negri. Here the vineyards cover 31 hectares. Nino Negri Valtellina wine is a reality that over time has been able to reconcile perfectly tradition and technology. In the second stage you will do a tour of the winery and a tasting of four different wines. One of these will be the Sforzato, the most prestigious wine in the region of Valtellina. It is obtained from a careful selection of the best grapes Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca), which are dried on wooden boards in a dry, well ventilated place called "Fruttaio". There they are kept at least 110 days, usually till late January. Much of the work, in fact, is done by the cold climate of the region, which allows the grapes to lose about 40% of its initial weight. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in oak barrels, then bottled. And this is how the great wine of Valtellina is produced. The return to Bellagio is by 19.00
